PRIDE STARTED AS A RIOT

Hell yeah, hun! Get your bricks out!

The first Pride wasn't a party or celebration. It was a RIOT.

While we may never really know who threw the first brick at Stonewall, we can all agree that bricks have become a powerful symbol in fighting for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. The brick signifies so many different things to me; not only in the fight against oppression and for human rights but also to remind us of the lives of those in our community that we have lost in the battle. A brick is a symbol of unity… and also of hope. A brick helped to start paving the way to a better future. So let’s continue the fight, shall we?

As an Anarcho-Punk, I really wanted to find a way to showcase Pride in a new way. And as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, not only did I want to make it fun and creative… I wanted these pieces to make a statement... and I wanted that statement to be as obvious as a bright neon sign. We will not be silenced without a fight.

No Pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.” Marsha P. Johnson
